Cake I Can Believe In…

Maybe I’m being naive here but in the first 12 hours of his presidency Barack Obama has done more for me than any other president in history.  My day started as per the usual monotony…no job, no cake.  Then at about noon I got a call from a job I’ve been waiting to hear back from.  They say, “Barack Obama is now the president, we would like to offer you this job.” Of course I accept and say, “Thank you! God Bless You and May God Bless the United States of America.”

Great.   We’re off to a good start.

So, I go in to work to do some preliminary training and think, “maybe I’ll go to the bomb cafe across the street for a sandwich later.”  Well, I did go back to that bomb cafe for a sandwich later and, wouldn’t you know it, they gave me a free cake.  They said, “Barack Obama is now president, we would like to offer you this cake.”  I graciously accepted this inaugural cake and thanked our server.  He told me that they were giving free cake to all customers this evening.  I felt slightly less special but more hopeful and optimistic about the next 4 years.  Imagine, free cake for every American…every day.  Man, fuck fireside chats, nothing builds confidence like confections.

Not two fork fulls in to my complimentary chocolate crown cake and guess who’s back.  THE SERVER…with MORE CAKE!  Wow.  Samantha comments, “when was the last time we went to a restaurant and each ordered dessert? when was the last time we each ordered two?”

She’s right.  It’s never happened before.  And, Barack Obama has never been president before. Any scientist worth his job in cakes can see the direct causality of our newly anointed leader and my good fortune this day.

So, without further ado I proclaim President Obama, in his first half-day of service, the best President in history.  His election represents more to me than the ascendancy of our first African-American President. For me, it represents actual, tangible change, both in jobs and cakes.

On this, the day after our country celebrated the birth of Martin Luther King, Jr.,  an entire restaurant in Los Angeles enjoyed two types of cake:

Double Chocolate Crown and Coconut Creme, eaten together, side by side, in perfect harmony.  Happy birthday MLK.
